- HotelBig 5 of Pench: What Makes Our Safari Different
The Pench National Park is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in India, well known for its diverse flora and fauna. Every year, it’s visited by thousands of wildlife enthusiasts who participate in different types of Jeep safaris to explore its wildlife, so if you’re also planning a visit to this region, you’re making the right choice.
However, if you can’t decide on where you would stay and which jeep safari to book, don’t worry. Saj In The Forest has a unique collection of jeep and boat safaris that will allow you to explore Pench and its Big 5 in the best possible way. What are the big 5, and how is our safari different from that of other safari service providers? That’s precisely what we’re going to answer in this blog.
The Big 5 of Pench: Five Big and Rare Animals Found in the Pench National Park
While the Pench National Park is home to a large number of animal families, some of them are more special than the others because of their sheer size, power, and rarity. We refer to them as The Big 5 of Pench, and they include the following:
#1. Bengal Tiger
Pench National Park is famous as a home to the Bengal Tiger population in India. Ranking among the largest wild cats, they weigh between 100 to 258 kg depending on their gender and age, and occupy a large part of the Pench tiger reserve. The territory under their control includes safari zones accessible from the Turia and Karmajhiri gates of Pench National Park. Some major blocks in those areas include Jhandimatta, Kullutek, Sitaghat, Rayakassa, Murumgadda, Malkundam, Patdev, and Alijhod.
#2. Indian Leopard
Often found in early mornings or evenings, the Indian Leopard is another major attraction of Pench National Park. If you’re lucky, you can even spot the rare melanistic (black) variety of Indian Leopard here, especially if you embark on a night safari. Waterholes are the most common places where they can be found, and the Karmajhiri gate offers easy access to areas where you can find them.
#3. Indian Bison/Gaur
The Pench region is also home to a healthy population of Gaur or Indian Bison. Known as the largest wild bovine species, they are herbivores, so you can find them grazing in the grasslands of Pench National Park. They are easy to spot with their distinct white socks on the feet and black upper bodies.
#4. Indian Wolf
The Indian Grey Wolf is one of the endangered animals you can find in Pench National Park. They’re more difficult to find than tigers as they’re kept in less-populated buffer zones due to their endangered nature, but you can still find them on our Jeep safari. They move around in small packs, and their sharp instincts help them hunt and survive. Although they’re few in numbers, they play a crucial role in preserving the prey population of the Pench ecosystem.
#5. Sloth Bear
The shaggy-furred sloth bears of Pench are known to prey on insects, and they can be spotted digging for insects and termites in the termite mounds of the park. They are nocturnal animals, which means you can find them during a night safari only. The only time you can spot them during the day is in the peak summer season. They’re also known for their ability to stand on their hind legs to run very fast in situations when they feel threatened.
